Caitlin Parker (‘21 BA), has been a dedicated member of the Alumni Student Support and Engagement Team (ASSET) since 2023. Currently pursuing a Master of Counselling at City University Seattle, her studies help inform her volunteer contributions to the mental health and wellness of U of A students.
As an ASSET volunteer, Caitlin participates in a range of activities on campus, from Week of Welcome tabling and board game nights to Wellness Wednesdays. One event close to her heart is the Unwind Your Mind Snack Handout during finals, where volunteers pass out snacks and words of encouragement to students studying in the libraries: "It's such a small thing, but it makes such a huge difference," she explains. "Helping them look up from the computer, even for a brief second, to realize that someone is looking out for them… it reminds them they are not alone and can brighten their day."
Another one of Caitlin’s favorite ASSET events was a Pumpkin Painting workshop held in partnership with University of Alberta International. What began as a lighthearted activity evolved into a deeply connecting experience: "The participants weren't just painting; they were sharing their stories and personal experiences through the things they were painting," she recalls. One student's color choices reflected their cultural heritage, while others expressed their emotions through art. "It was a really great way to share and connect with students – meaningful to watch and be a part of. It added a deeper level to a simple activity."
When asked about her decision to volunteer at the University, she shares that it holds a special place in her heart. Appreciative of her own positive experiences, joining ASSET was a way to give back to the community that helped shape her. She also values the continued connection to new perspectives and learning opportunities that volunteering provides, enriching her current educational journey and future practice.
Beyond the University, Caitlin, who also holds a Master of Arts in Disaster and Emergency Management continues to bring her interests and passions to the greater Edmonton community. She volunteers as a ground searcher with the Edmonton Regional Search and Rescue Association and helps new professionals connect as the Director of Emerging Professionals for the Canadian Risk and Hazard Network. Additionally, her commitment extends to disaster relief as a volunteer with the Red Cross where she has previously supported those affected by the Alberta fires.
For those considering volunteering, Caitlin offers: "Start with something you are interested in or passionate about – it makes the experience feel more meaningful. It’s a privilege to be involved with the things you love." Volunteering, she notes, has also fostered her personal growth by connecting her with new people and exposing her to new activities, even sparking unexpected interests (like painting pumpkins!).
In her spare time, Caitlin enjoys reading, spending time with friends and family, traveling, being outdoors, and the challenge of escape room board games.
