Volunteer Spotlight: Helen Massini, '99 BSc, '03 Dip(DentHyg)

Helen Massini, ’99 BSc, ’03 Dip(DentHyg), is a Registered Dental Hygienist and has been volunteering with the Dental Hygiene Alumni Chapter (DHAC) since its inception in 2005. Helen started volunteering immediately in order to stay connected to the U of A community after graduation. When the DHAC was first created, Helen was asked to join since the members of the original executive were already familiar with the energy she brings and the great work Helen had been doing in her other volunteer endeavours.

Since Helen started volunteering with the DHAC, she has held many roles, including President and Vice-President. After starting a family, she still remained involved as a member-at-large and is currently the DHAC liaison for the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry Alumni Advisory Council. Helen has also taken an interest in photography and takes photos at alumni events.

Helen has enjoyed every minute of her volunteer experience. She has made many friends through volunteering and she is grateful knowing these experiences have connected her to wonderful people she may not have had a chance to meet. For a recent Dental Hygiene webinar, when it came to finding members of the community for a panel, Helen reached out to people in her network and easily found speakers for the event. Helen has a natural ability to connect with others, which has made her a valued member of the DHAC.

Helen’s advice for future volunteers? Find something you’re passionate about and jump in.  It doesn’t have to be a huge undertaking, you can make volunteering work for you, even when starting a family.  Take advantage of different opportunities...if you love taking pictures, you can volunteer to do the photography and you may find a new hobby or meet some lifelong friends along the way!
