Volunteer: Conversation Club in-person (Education North) PM

Our students love Conversation Club! It's a chance for ESL students to practice and improve their listening and speaking skills in a relaxed atmosphere. Every week we talk about something new, with some guidance from the Student Engagement Centre staff. All you need to do is show up and be ready to chat with a small group of students. This is a great opportunity for anyone: alumni, current U of A students, former EAP students, and community members.

Thank you in advance for your interest. Please email Vicky (chiachi@ualberta.ca) if you have any questions. We are excited to have you as a volunteer!

Reminder: Please speak English as much as possible while you are volunteering with Conversation Club. It is important that we give ESL students a chance to practice their English communication skills. Conversation Club is not a language exchange program. Thank you!

Volunteer: Dino Lab Introduction & Safety Orientation 2026

Help us clean our fossils!

The Dino Lab has the largest volunteer corps on the University Campus, and we've had this distinction for a number of years. A fact we are both proud of, and very appreciative of as if we didn't have our volunteers we would never get anywhere near the amount of specimens prepared that we do.

The opportunity you are currently looking at is for the required Safety Orientation (as per OH&S regulations) for potential Volunteers (both undergraduates, graduates, and the general public) who wish to work in the Palaeontological Preparation Lab, and takes approximately 60 minutes. We typically run four (4) Introduction & Safety Orientation tours per year.

Dates StatusMarch 4th from 1500 to 1600 (3 PM to 4 PM)
Full June 5th from 1500 to 1600 (3 PM to 4 PM)
1/10 September 8th 1500 to 1600 (3 PM to 4 PM)
0/10
December 2nd 1500 to 1600 (3 PM to 4 PM)
0/10

If you think you are interested in working in the lab then please read the following basic information about the lab and if you are still interested then send an email to our volunteer Co-ordinator Howard Gibbins (gibbins@ualberta.ca), and he will send you further information and book an appointment for you to take the training.

Do not use the waitlist as it is not checked.

Once you have completed the safety tour, you will then be able to access the general schedules for shifts and any specialised training we offer.

In the event you find you are unable to make your shift for whatever reason, please log in and  update/cancel your booking so others can have your spot.

Our Labs

The University operates two preparation labs. The Daytime Lab is operated by the preparatory staff, and runs from 0900 to 1600 (9 a.m. to 4 p.m.) weekdays. It is located in basement of Biological Sciences CW-005.

We also have an Evening Dino Lab which is operated by the Graduate Students that runs from 1700 to 1900 (5 pm to 7 pm) Monday through Thursday from approximately the second week of September to the First week of April. It is located on the 4th floor of the Microbiology Wing in Biological Sciences.

Your Health

As you are working with dirt and sharp instruments we strongly recommend that your vaccinations for Tetanus be up to date. Health Canada recommends a tetanus booster every 10 years. If you are sensitive to dust, then you are welcome to bring a mask to wear.

Age Restrictions

University regulations state that volunteers working alone (with no supervision) have to be 18 years or older. If you are interested in volunteering but are under 18 then we would welcome a parent or guardian to volunteer with you as well. Please contact us for further information, as there is a special volunteer waiver for those people under 18.

High School / Work Experience Students

Students who attend participating schools can get credit by volunteering in the lab (1 credit / 25 hours), please see your school's work-experience co-ordinator for further information.  If you don't know who your work experience co-ordinator is please contact our co-ordinator and he'll be happy to put you in touch with them.

Volunteer: Festival of Undergraduate Research & Creative Activities (FURCA) 2026 - Oral Presentation Judges

TheUndergraduate Research Initiative (URI) is currently seeking volunteers to help judge student presentations at our upcomingFestival of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities (FURCA) taking place in-person, March 10-12, 2026. FURCA is an annual celebration that provides undergraduate students from all disciplines the opportunity to showcase their research.

A primary goal of FURCA is to support undergraduate students in their ongoing skill development. This includes supporting students in learning how to communicate about their research with diverse audiences. As a volunteer judge, you will help students develop their communication skills by asking questions, evaluating their presentations according to a rubric, and providing constructive feedback to students. Although skill development is the primary focus of FURCA, the judging process is competitive, and there are a small number of monetary awards for exceptional presentations. Scores and feedback provided by volunteer judges directly influence award outcomes.

We encourage individuals from all disciplines to serve as volunteer judges! Judges are not required to have specific disciplinary expertise for every presentation. This is a multi-disciplinary event, and one of the criteria students are judged on is their ability to communicate effectively to audiences from other disciplines. This is a great opportunity to engage with curious, creative U of A students, and learn about research across disciplines!

Duties:

Sign up for a minimum of 1 shift (2 hour slots), taking place in-person in the University Commons (North Campus), March 10-12, 2026.

Read and familiarize yourself with judging instructions that will be sent out at a later date

Actively participate in the live Q&A portion following each presentation

Provide specific, mindful, and constructive feedback to student presenters

Submit scores and written feedback for each student presenter

Additional Details and Requirements

You may only sign up to a maximum of 2 shifts per day, thus the maximum number of shifts one could have is 4 over the two days of presentations.

If you are also signing up to volunteer for Poster Presentations, please ensure that you do not book any conflicting shifts.

Judges must be graduate students, post-doctoral scholars, faculty members, staff, or U of A alumni

Undergraduate students are not permitted to judge

Presentations will take a variety of formats and will be clustered into scheduled blocks of poster presentations, oral presentations, or creative activities. Presentations are normally clustered into broad disciplinary groupings (tentatively indicated below and subject to adjustment based on the number or abstracts received from each disciplinary area).

Oral Presentation Presentation Schedules for FURCA 2026 (*subject to change)

Tuesday, March 10, 9:00 am -1:00 pm (oral presentations, Health Sciences)

Tuesday, March 10, 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm (oral presentations, Social Sciences & Humanities)

Wednesday, March 11, 9:00 am -1:00 pm (oral presentations presentations, Interdisciplinary)

Writing Your Digital Postcard

Project Postcard is currently hosted on Padlet, an online notice board that's free and easy to use. Write your note of encouragement to students and feel free to get creative by drawing a picture, uploading a photo, adding a GIF or attaching a video message. The link to the Padlet will be shared widely across campus during exams so lots of students will have the chance to see your note!

How it works:

Visit the Project Postcard Padlet board (you do not need to login or sign up for an account to share a note). Click the pink "+" button in the bottom right hand corner of the screen or double-click anywhere on the Project Postcard Padlet board A new blank note will appear on the board. Type in your title and message. If you wish, use the icons below the message to add creative flourishes: Upload an image from your photo library Add a link to a website Add an image, video, GIF or audio file from the internet Take a photo of yourself using your computer's camera Draw a digital doodle on the onscreen canvas Don't forget to sign your name and press enter to finish!
Not sure what to write?
