Description

U of A, it's time to support our local community by helping to grow Edmonton's urban forest! Adding native trees and shrubs will provide numerous environmental, social and economic benefits to this area and beyond. Root for Trees plays a critical role in the landscape management process of naturalization. Over time, these grassy areas are planted with trees, shrubs and wildflowers and brought back to a more natural state, resulting in economic, environmental and quality of life benefits.

This year, we will be planting at the Allard naturalization area. You can view the location of the park here.

Root For Trees - The Planting

We will be planting outdoors, so please dress for the weather! Root For Trees includes physical labor, including moving trees and plants and digging holes! Working in a natural area, it is possible that you may encounter thistles, sticks, or garbage. Consider dressing in layers, long pants, and wearing a hat. You must wear sturdy, closed-toed shoes, such as runners. Volunteers may not participate in planting activities if they wear inappropriate footwear, such as sandals, flip-flops, or high heel shoes.

Remember to bring a water bottle and snacks, as planting trees can be a very physical activity! We suggest you bring sunscreen, bug spray, and anything else that will make your planting program an enjoyable experience. Root for Trees will supply the shovels, gloves, and plants.

Volunteers can register individually, or as a team.

We welcome volunteers of all ages to participate!

We request that there be one responsible person over the age of 16 for every three children under 7 years old. Any minor, below the age of 18, requires a parent or guardian to be present, and responsible for the minor, while volunteering with us.

If you are bringing children under the age of 18, please click "Respond as a Team", then "reserve additional spots" with how many members of your group there are. We will contact you with the appropriate waiver that must be signed prior to the event.

After the trees have been planted (1 PM - 3 PM), please join us for a Picnic Box Social from 3 PM - 4 PM.

Picnic Social

Pack a blanket and join us for a picnic box social in the Allard Naturalization Park!  The Picnic Social will begin at 3 PM after the planting has been completed! Volunteers can order a gourmet picnic box that will include a mix of sandwiches, wraps, fruit, desserts and a drink!  Meat and Vegetarian options available.  To help prevent waste, individual picnic boxes are available for purchase at a subsidized rate of $6!  All proceeds collected will be donated to the Campus Food Bank!

You can order your Picnic Box here

The deadline for Picnic Box Orders is Wednesday, June 7th.
