Description

Prairie Urban Farm (PUF) is a one-acre, mixed crop, community food system in the University of Alberta's South Campus. Their goals are to demonstrate and provide skill-building opportunities in alternative, regenerative ways of growing food within the city and to grow access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food.

As a volunteer you will help with tasks in the garden, including weeding, harvesting, watering, etc. You will also receive a tour of the farm, hear about the various projects PUF has been working on, and learn where all the vegetables go after they've been harvested.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Sign a volunteer waiver
  • Dress appropriately for the activity (make sure to wear clothes and shoes you don't mind getting dirty, and dress for the weather)
  • Don't be afraid to get your hands dirty!

PUF has a standing invitations for volunteers to bring the following to the garden for compost:

  • used tea or coffee grounds
  • eggshells (rinsed)
  • raw, unprocessed fruits and vegetable scraps and peels (if not organic, please rinse well to get rid of pesticides)
  • brown cardboard
  • shredded brown or untreated, unbleached paper
  • organic grass clippings (no pesticides ever used)
