Volunteer Spotlight: Marilyn McNeil-Morin, '77 BSc(HEc)
Marilyn McNeil-Morin, ’77 BSc(HEc), is an active volunteer with the Toronto Regional Chapter and a recipient of the 2020 Alumni Honour Award. After organizing her class 10 year reunion, Marilyn moved to different provinces and didn’t stay connected to the U of A until she started volunteering as a class organizer at her 40 year reunion. At this reunion, Marilyn found out about the Toronto Regional Chapter and has been volunteering with them ever since. Marilyn’s work as the Director of the Fashion Exchange at George Brown College gave her an opportunity to present a webinar on the topic of sustainable fashion to U of A alumni. Marilyn went above and beyond with her presentation and even volunteered to answer any questions she couldn’t get to after the event.
Going above and beyond is a common theme for Marilyn — since she started volunteering at events in Toronto, she has been happy to help out in whatever role she is needed in, including sending out invitations, registering guests at events and contacting alumni. Marilyn recently decided to get more involved by becoming a mentor in the alumni-to-alumni mentoring program. She found this experience very rewarding and enjoyed sharing her own experiences with someone who had the same career interests. In fact, Marilyn’s mentee attended her webinar along with Marilyn’s own mentor, which was the perfect full circle moment for Marilyn.
Marilyn recognizes the U of A and the people at the U of A that helped her get where she is today as an important pillar in her life story. She finds so much value in volunteering and keeping her connection to the university. Marilyn would encourage others to get involved and volunteer, as it is such an enriching experience where you can meet people from all walks of life.
