Volunteer Spotlight: Michelle Goonasekera, '18 BSc
Michelle Goonasekera, '18 BSc, is an active volunteer with our Alumni Student Support and Engagement Team (ASSET). Michelle works in advance healthcare planning, helping Albertans plan for their future medical care. Helping others is an important value to Michelle and one of the reasons why she became involved with ASSET.
After graduation, Michelle missed being on campus and the activities she was involved in, and she thought that ASSET would be a great way to be involved as an alumna and also to give back. For the past year, Michelle has been volunteering with the online English Conversation Club, where she meets with a small group of students who are trying to improve their English skills. Michelle has had so many positives from this experience. She said that she is learning from the students just as much as they are learning from her. For some students, she is witnessing their journey from their home countries to campus and she couldn’t be prouder.
Another ASSET activity that Michelle had fun doing is handing out fruit to students studying in the library during exam time. It was so great to brighten their day and Michelle had fun with the other volunteers. She loves the sense of community being formed with her fellow ASSET volunteers. Michelle finds them inspiring and appreciates the richness in diversity and experience that she gets to hear from them.
Michelle’s advice on volunteering: You get to meet so many different people and it’s a great way to recharge your batteries and reinvigorate yourself.
