Who We Are

Help us clean our fossils!

The Dino Lab, a facility in the Department of Biological Sciences, is a palaeontological research lab headed by Dr. Philip Currie, Dr. Corwin Sullivan, and Dr. Eva Koppelhus, with a focus on the Late Cretaceous dinosaurs and plants of Alberta.

The Chief Technician in the Lab is Clive Coy, and there are two other technicians as well Robin Sissons and Howard Gibbins.

We have the largest volunteer corps on the University Campus, and have had for a number of years. This is a fact we are both proud of, and very appreciative of as if we didn't have volunteers we would never get anywhere near the amount of specimens prepared that we do.

No experience in palaeontology is necessary to volunteer with us as we will teach you and give you something easy to start with. As you gain experience, we will give you progressively more difficult projects when you feel comfortable doing them, and when we feel you can handle them.

Required Safety Tour

Under Occupations Health & Safety rules all volunteers need to take a safety tour of the lab before they are able to volunteer. These tours take place approximately 3-4 times per calendar year, and can accommodate up to 10 people at a time. Tours are 1 hour long if everyone is on time.

If you think you are interested in working in the lab then please send an email to the volunteer Co-ordinator Howard Gibbins (gibbins@ualberta.ca), who will send you further information and book an appointment for you to take the training.

What We Do

Program Goals

The lab's goals for our volunteers is to allow them to learn at their own pace the necessary skills and techniques of proper palaeontological preparation and conservation, and to foster an interest in palaeontology and research.

Our goals for the collection are the protection, conservation, and cataloguing of as many fossil specimens from the various sites we collect from around Alberta for scientific study.
