Who We Are

Help us clean our fossils!

The Dino Lab, a facility in the Department of Biological Sciences, is a palaeontological research lab headed by Dr. Philip Currie, Dr. Corwin Sullivan, and Dr. Eva Koppelhus, with a focus on the Late Cretaceous dinosaurs and plants of Alberta.

The Chief Technician in the Lab is Clive Coy, and there are two other technicians as well Robin Sissons and Howard Gibbins.

We have the largest volunteer corps on the University Campus, and have had for a number of years. This is a fact we are both proud of, and very appreciative of as if we didn't have volunteers we would never get anywhere near the amount of specimens prepared that we do.

No experience in palaeontology is necessary to volunteer with us as we will teach you and give you something easy to start with. As you gain experience, we will give you progressively more difficult projects when you feel comfortable doing them, and when we feel you can handle them.

The Daytime Dino Lab is operated by the preparatory staff, and runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays. It is located in basement of Biological Sciences CW-005. Access is via West elevator or stairs only.

The Evening Dino Lab is operated by the Graduate Students of Dr. Philip Currie & Dr. Corwin Sullivan, and runs from 5 pm to 7 pm Monday through Thursday from approximately the second week of September to the First week of April. It is located on the 4th floor of the Microbiology Wing in Biological Sciences. Access is easiest from the East elevator or stairs.

Under Occupations Health & Safety rules all volunteers need to take a safety tour of the lab before they are able to volunteer. These tours take place monthly, and can accommodate up to 10 people at a time.

For further information &/or to book a safety tour please email Howard Gibbins (gibbins@ualberta.ca).

What We Do

Program Goals

The goals for our volunteers is to allow them to learn at their own pace the necessary skills and techniques of proper palaeontological preparation and conservation, and to foster an interest in palaeontology and research. Our goals for the collection are the protection and conservation of fossil specimens from the Dino Lab, and preparation and cataloguing of as many specimens as possible for scientific study.
