Who We Are

Our history

The Campus Food Bank (CFB) is the oldest food bank on a university campus in Canada.

We served our first student clients in 1991 when the Graduate Students’ Association began department-level food collection and distribution as a response to high tuition and fees for international students. The food bank was quickly co-funded by the Students’ Union, and we continue to be generously supported by both undergraduate and graduate student unions.

In 1994, we became a registered Canadian charity with an independent board of directors. For more than 30 years now, we have provided supplementary food programming and education to the U of A community.

Our vision

Equitable food access across our campus community.

Our mission

Championing immediate and systemic food accessibility at the U of A.

What We Do

We offer a suite of food support programs to students, staff and alumni of the University of Alberta, and their dependents:

  • Our supplementary grocery program is dedicated to supporting food insecure individuals in our University of Alberta community, including students, staff and recent alumni.

  • We run a weekly Saturday bus trip to Superstore, T&T Supermarket, and some specialty shops on 34 Ave

  • We offer free breakfast on Wednesday mornings in SUB throughout fall and winter semesters, and we keep an assortment of free snack stations stocked across campus.

  • We operate the UofA Community Pantry in Rutherford Library, which is 100% dependent on community food donations.

  • WECAN is a monthly bulk grocery program, where campus community members can purchase low cost fruits, vegetables, and meat.
