Prairie Urban Farm (PUF) is a one-acre, mixed crop, community food system in the University of Alberta's South Campus. Their goals are to demonstrate and provide skill-building opportunities in alternative, regenerative ways of growing food within the city and to grow access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food.
As a volunteer you will help tasks in the garden, including weeding, harvesting, watering, etc. You will also receive a tour of the farm, hear about the various projects PUF has been working on and learn where all the vegetables go after they've been harvested.
This May, an exciting planting adventure awaits! We will be planting cold-hearty vegetable, herb and flower transplants that all need your help! Weather pending, we may also be seeding green peas, greens and root crops.
Key Responsibilities:
- Sign a volunteer waiver
- Dress appropriately for the activity (make sure to wear clothes and shoes you don't mind getting dirty, and dress for the weather)
- Don't be afraid to get your hands dirty!
PUF has a standing invitations for volunteers to bring the following to the garden for compost:
- used tea or coffee grounds
- eggshells (rinsed)
- raw, unprocessed fruits and vegetable scraps and peels (if not organic, please rinse well to get rid of pesticides)
- brown cardboard
- shredded brown or untreated, unbleached paper
- organic grass clippings (no pesticides ever used)
